Is there a clinical trial that compares old vs new sudafed?

Post by Surgo »

I ask this question because I have a bad cold. I remember old sudafed making me feel a lot better, and I got new sudafed and so far it's been completely useless. Before I get my outrage and anger against the man and the war on drugs on, I'd like to make sure that this experience is actually real and not just a consequence of having a different type of cold.

Fauxdophedrine...is fucking recognized as a word by my Chrome spell checker!

But more importantly, it doesn't work.

Sudafed used to work, but as with any product taken off the market to be "fixed" it comes back fucked up and useless.

You could ask the pharmacist for a stronger OTC version that isn't usually on the shelf and they may have something stronger that doesn't require prescription, or you could ask a doctor and just tell them that Sudafed used to work, but now it is too week, and you just want something stronger like it used to be to work again like it used to.

I did some googling, and found the consensus of a number of meta-studies is that the new Sudafed, taken orally, does nothing at all.

Great.

On the bright side, you're not doing meth (although that would probably clear your cold right up).

Bright side? I thought the whole point of sudafed was that even if it didn't actually clear up what was bugging you it made you high enough that you didn't notice.

Maybe for you. It gave me 3 hours of frighteningly fast heart palpitations. I took it once and seriously thought I was going to die.

Oh, I've never had it. A roommate extolled it's virtues, particularly for sinus congestion? I think it was.

Yeah, pseudoephedrine is great. Just don't use it if you're taking SSRIs or MAOIs. And yeah, in conjunction with the cold it will drop your IQ by about 50 points. I've seen an average drop of one grade point on tests where I had a bad cold and was taking sudafed.

Yeah - I made the mistake of going to the doctor right after I'd taken some and my blood pressure clocked in at 196/110. That's not normal (I'm somewhere around 125/75).

So what...Sudafed is now a suppository? it works better maybe if you take it up the ass?

I had to switch to Alka-Seltzer Cold & Sinus, but that was taken away too and came back weaker and nastier tasting.

Quafenesen or something like that used to be the killer cold drug, but it was all removed from the market and replaced with this crap that dont work.

When I did the course with the Pharmacy Guild, they did basically admit that "new pseudofed" has been seen to be much less effective, and so "if you don't want to go to the doctor to get a script written for pseudo-ephedrine, try oxymetazoline as a nasal spray instead".

And oxymetazoline worked well for me when my sinuses were blocked bad enough to give me an agonising ear infection. So I'd give it my recommendation. No prescription needed, I don't think anyone has figured out a way to get high off it yet.

New sudafed is basically worthless taken orally. It is effective when administered in other ways, but since you buy pills to take it orally that's not particularly helpful. Stick to the old stuff if you can, I think you can still get it by asking a pharmacist for the real stuff (they used to keep it behind the counter where I live, though that may be different where you're at).

In Australia, you can get old sudafed by prescription if you need a lot, but basically it's schedule 3 (Pharmacist-only: talk to the pharmacist).

I'm guessing it's the same in America it's illegal and carries a mandatory life sentence in America.

Out of morbid curiosity... what other ways? crushing it up and snorting the shit?

Because phenylephrine has the shit kicked out of it by your GI tract, it pretty much sucks when taken orally. It is fairly effective when it gets into the blood in it's non-murdered form though, so yeah, snorting it and making your nasal mucus membranes cry would probably work better. That shouldn't be taken as a recommendation that you go do it though, because it's fucking stupid. If you really want that in your nose, you should get a nasal spray with the right dosage of phenylephrine in it; liquid suspension is your friend for all sorts of reasons.

Last time I checked you can only buy one box at a time (possibly per day? doesn't matter if it's kids' or 12-hour), and you have to put your name on a Big Brother list.

I just bought a box for my wife last week. You need to show them your driver's license and sign something literally saying you won't make meth.
